Drescher, Schrammel & Millöcker – Three Viennese Marches, arranged by John Mason

Mixed wind sextet (Flute, 2x Clarinet in Bb , 2x Trumpet, Bassoon)

Intermediate level; Duration 11 mins 15” (each march 3-4 mins)

The three marches, originally arranged for a small wind group to provide incidental music for Tom Stoppard’s hilarious farce On the Razzle, are a joy to play and to listen to. They underpin the play’s Viennese setting beautifully and also make wonderful toe-tapping concert numbers. The marches – Sievringer-Marsch of Carl Wilhelm Drescher (3’15”), Wien bleibt Wien! (4’00”) of Johann Schrammel and Carl Millöcker’s Freicorps-Marsch (4’00”) – all utilise songs popular in nineteenth century Vienna. Na freilich passen a die Märsche ebenso reizend zu Nestroys Einen Jux will er sich machen, die Urquelle Stoppards Lustspiels!

With parts in C and in B-flat the score can be flexibly used with different combinations of wind instruments. Materials also include a songsheet (in English) for the cast to join in the main tune of the Sievringer-Marsch to create a rousing curtain call.
