Franz Schubert – Marche Caractéristique no. 1, arranged by John Mason
Mixed Ensemble of Oboe, Clarinet in A , Horn in F, Bassoon and Piano)
Advanced level; Duration 7’30”
This arrangement perfectly offsets the two great masterpieces for the same combination of instruments by Mozart (Quintet, KV452) and by Beethoven (Quintet, Op.16). Schubert’s ‘Marche Caractéristique no. 1’ was originally scored for piano duet and written at the time of the 9th or ‘Great C major’ Symphony, described by Schumann as expressing ‘heavenly lengths’. The March shares many features of the finale of this great orchestral work. The three quintets together in a concert present an awe-inspiring insight into the wonderful developments in music in Vienna around 1800, a period of reform, revolution and rapture, politically as well as musically.
